Good resources should make a money decision smaller, not create another shopping list. These frugal living resources begin with free Frugal Harpy tools, then add a few official reference points and three books that each solve a different problem.

You do not need everything on this page. Use this order:

  1. Choose the one money question that needs an answer now.
  2. Run your real numbers through the closest free tool.
  3. Add a book or outside resource only if it helps with the part the numbers cannot settle.

Start With the Number You Need

Each tool below is free and built around a specific decision. Start with the row that sounds most like the question already in your head.

Your question Start here What it helps you see
Where is this month's money going? Zero-budget spreadsheet Income, planned spending, and the remaining gap in one monthly view.
Which debt should get the extra payment? Snowball vs. avalanche spreadsheet How payoff order changes motivation, estimated interest, and time.
What would an extra mortgage payment change? Mortgage payoff calculator How a repeatable extra amount may affect payoff time and estimated interest.
Could my current investments grow toward retirement? Coast FIRE calculator A long-term scenario based on your age, target, balance, and assumptions.

For Rules, Reports, and Consumer Rights

A calculator can model a scenario. It cannot tell you the current rules, show your official credit file, or replace primary consumer information. For those jobs, go closer to the source.

Consumer questions and complaints

CFPB Consumer Resources is the useful first stop for plain-language information about debt, credit cards, mortgages, bank accounts, and problems with a financial service.

Your official credit reports

AnnualCreditReport.com is the federally authorized source for free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Use it to inspect the underlying reports, not as a promise of a particular credit score.

A neutral compound-growth check

The Investor.gov Compound Interest Calculator lets you adjust contributions, time, rate, and compounding without steering you toward an investment product.

Three Books Worth Starting With

Books help most when the obstacle is not the arithmetic. Pick one based on the kind of thinking you need; buying all three at once will not make the plan clearer.

Best for Book Why this one
Building a complete money system Get Good with Money
Tiffany Aliche
A practical framework spanning budgeting, debt, saving, insurance, credit, and investing. Skip it if you already have those basics running and want specialist depth.
Connecting spending with time and values Your Money or Your Life
Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez
A strong fit for the FIRE reader who wants to rethink the cost of work and consumption. It is a perspective shift, not a quick budgeting manual.
Understanding behavior, risk, and patience The Psychology of Money
Morgan Housel
Useful when comparison, fear, or short-term thinking keeps disrupting the plan. It explains behavior well but does not give you a step-by-step budget.

Want a wider reading list? The Frugal Harpy book guide compares more options by topic and learning style.

What Earns a Place Here

  • A clear job: every item must answer a real budgeting, debt, credit, investing, or FIRE question.
  • Free before paid: a Frugal Harpy tool or primary public source comes before a commercial recommendation when it can do the job.
  • A reason to skip it: a recommendation is only useful when you can also see who does not need it.

These resources are for general education, not personalized financial, investment, credit, tax, or legal advice. Calculator results are estimates based on the numbers and assumptions entered; verify current terms and rules before acting.
